besides the omnipresent sun and sea, the first thing that strikes the visitor to rhodes is its strong oriental influence and charm. the island’s remote location on the south-eastern edge of europe and its rich multicultural heritage have shaped a precious identity. this is evident in the medieval city of rhodes, a unesco world heritage site. there, side-by-side or only a stone’s throw apart, you can see a greek orthodox or catholic church, a synagogue, a mosque, and an ancient temple.

this architectural heritage complements and enhances the natural beauty of rhodes. there are very few islands in the mediterranean with such a diverse and amazing countryside in such a relatively small area. just a few kilometers away from untouched beaches with emerald waters, the visitor can experience spectacular pinewood forests at high altitudes. remote parts of those areas are rich with wildlife including the fallow deer (dams dama) indigenous to the island since antiquity.

along with its natural beauty, rhodes’ healthy climate has been known since ancient times, with historic reports mentioning the healing qualities of the island’s weather and its waters. it comes as no surprise that so many visitors return to the island every year. and many of the them have chosen rhodes for their second homes, or have come to live here permanently.

in a place where family, community values and traditions are considered important, daily life is a pleasant experience. the warmth of the islanders and their relaxed pace of life are contagious. neighbours will smile and say hello to a passerby in the street, even a stranger, offering whatever they may hold in their hands, be it fruit, bread, olive oil or sometimes even ouzo.

its international airport makes rhodes accessible from all major european cities, so the island is ideal for a second or relocation home. both seafront luxury villas and splendid historic houses come at prices not found anywhere else .

dating back to 1899, this restored neoclassical townhouse sits within one of the old quarters of the city, where narrow stone streets lead quietly toward the harbour, local cafés, and the waterfront. carefully renovated in accordance with the requirements of its listed status, the house preserves the proportions and architectural details of the original residence while incorporating discreet contemporary upgrades that support year-round living.

the peach-toned façade, framed by pale shutters and classical detailing, reflects the character of the surrounding neighbourhood. inside, high ceilings, original timber doors, patterned floor tiles, and polished wooden staircases retain the atmosphere of the period house, while thermal insulation, central heating, and underfloor air conditioning have been integrated with restraint. thick stone walls naturally regulate the interior temperature during the warmer months, lending the house a sense of calm and solidity throughout the year.

the entrance hall opens into a sequence of bright reception spaces arranged around the central staircase. soft natural light moves through tall windows and traditional shutters, illuminating the pastel-toned interiors and original flooring. the main sitting and dining room feels both formal and welcoming, while an extensive library lined with full-height shelving creates a quieter retreat within the house.

toward the rear, the kitchen connects directly to the courtyard garden, allowing daily living to extend naturally outdoors. this enclosed exterior space is one of the defining features of the property — private, sheltered, and unexpectedly tranquil within the centre of town. climbing plants, terracotta walls, and shaded dining areas create the feeling of a hidden garden removed from the rhythm of the surrounding streets. morning light filters softly across the stone paving, while the outdoor kitchen and seating areas support relaxed living throughout the warmer seasons.

upstairs, three bedrooms are arranged around the original timber staircase. wooden flooring brings warmth to the upper level, while the bathroom combines white and blue ceramic finishes in keeping with the home’s traditional character. several rooms overlook the courtyard below, reinforcing the sense of privacy and enclosure that defines the property.

the house balances architectural integrity with practical comfort, preserving the atmosphere of a historic urban residence while remaining entirely suited to contemporary use. positioned within walking distance of the harbour, the beach, and the town’s boutiques and restaurants, it offers a quieter way of living within the centre of the city.
