somewhere between calabria and corfu, the blue really begin s… you are aware of a change in the heart of things: aware of the horizon begin ning to stain at the rim of the world: aware of islands coming out of the darkness to meet you’. so begin s lawrence durrell’s 1945 ode to corfu, prospero’s cell. even today, visitors to the island often arrive by sea, approaching from italy in the west of the greek mainland in the east.

in the early morning sunlight, the pastel-hued houses overlook corfu town’s historic port. they create a charming medley of slender levels interconnected by narrow alleyways. laundry hangs from every balcony, resembling vibrant festive bunting swaying in the breeze.

towering venetian mansions, bearing ancient coats of colourful paint softened by countless winters, give town visitors the sensation of stepping into a watercolour masterpiece.

corfu has rightfully earned its reputation as greece’s music capital

the island boasts a multitude of music associations, orchestras, bands, and a musical tradition dating back 400 years to the venetian era of the island.

at the heart of the town lies a broad tree-lined promenade known as the spianada. elegant french arcades reminiscent of rue de rivoli echo through the air. an intriguing british influence can be discovered on this grand square. it transforms into a cricket pitch during the summer, a unique feature as it’s the only operational sports field within a unesco world heritage site.

meanwhile , the corfiot countryside showcases a mournful beauty unparalleled across greece. it contrasts starkly with the stark barrenness of the aegean. drenched in brilliant white sunlight during summer, the island undergoes a sublime transformation thanks to winter rains. this causes lush greenery to blanket the inland valleys, which are thickly carpeted with wildflowers and adorned with gnarled olive trees, while dense groves of swaying cypresses punctuate the landscape.

in the sophisticated northeast, known as “kensington-on-sea,” you’ll find the finest real estate in greece. the imposing summer villa of the rothschild family anchors it. here, the luxury villa lifestyle reigns supreme. hillside properties are secluded amidst the landscape, boasting private infinity pools and awe-inspiring sea views. the enigmatic epirote mountains, crowned in snow, loom mysteriously in the east.

on corfu’s western coastline, where the hills above pentati descend sharply toward the ionian, villa nalya sits quietly among olive terraces with uninterrupted views across the open sea. the house follows the natural contours of the hillside rather than dominating them, combining exposed concrete, corfiot limestone and broad expanses of glass within a landscape of mature olive trees and coastal vegetation. the approach winds gradually through the grove, and as the road narrows the sound of the island softens to wind through silver leaves and the steady movement of the sea below.

the architecture is deliberately restrained, allowing light, horizon and landscape to define the atmosphere of the house. arranged across two levels, the interiors maintain an uninterrupted visual connection with the water from almost every principal space. full-height sliding glass panels retract completely along the main living area, removing the boundary between inside and out so that the pale travertine flooring continues directly onto the terrace. throughout the day, changing reflections from the sea move across the ceilings and stone surfaces, while the elevated position of the house draws cooling air naturally through the rooms.

the main living space combines sitting, dining and kitchen areas within a single open volume facing west toward the sunset. light oak cabinetry and dark stone surfaces introduce warmth and contrast against the cooler tones of concrete, limestone and glass. the furnishings remain low and understated, allowing the horizon to remain the focal point. in the afternoon, the scent of pine and wild herbs rises from the hillside below, carried inland by the sea breeze that reaches the terrace before sunset.

above, the bedroom level feels more private and sheltered. both bedrooms open onto individual balconies screened with horizontal oak shutters that filter the morning light into narrow bands across the floors. timber panelling softens the architecture, while the restrained palette of stone, microcement and natural wood continues into the bathrooms, where hand-carved basins and matte black fittings introduce a quieter tactile quality. the orientation of the house allows the bedrooms to remain naturally ventilated throughout the warmer months, benefiting from the prevailing coastal airflow moving up from the sea.

a planted roof terrace extends the living spaces outdoors once again, creating a more secluded setting above the main structure. from here the coastline unfolds northward along the western edge of corfu, particularly striking in the final hours of daylight when the sea begin s to reflect the bronze and rose tones of the evening sky. the roof garden feels protected yet entirely open to the landscape, designed for long evenings outdoors beneath the changing light.

at the edge of the main terrace, the infinity pool projects outward above the cliffside on a teak deck framed by low limestone walls. the water line merges directly with the horizon, reinforcing the sense that the house sits suspended between hillside and sea. around the pool, native planting and natural stone integrate the structure into the surrounding terrain rather than separating it from it.

behind the house, the olive grove extends across approximately 5,000 sqm (53,820 sqft) of terraced land, with mature trees still producing fruit each autumn. despite the secluded setting, the property remains within reach of corfu town and the island’s western beaches, while retaining the atmosphere of a private coastal retreat shaped by landscape, light and the rhythm of the ionian sea.
