THE LOCATION:
Johannisberg, named national winner of the “Let’s Make Our Village More Beautiful” competition in 1991, is one of the most historic and picturesque wine-growing villages in the Rheingau. Perched high above the Rhine, the imposing Johannisberg Castle dominates the townscape – once a monastery, now a landmark. Founded as early as 1106, it became the birthplace of a world-famous winegrowing tradition: it was here that, in 1775, Benedictine monks discovered Spätlese by chance – an event that transformed winegrowing forever.

What began with noble rot led via Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese to the first Eiswein in 1858 – also produced on the Johannisberg. That is why the village is still regarded today as the ‘cradle of all high-quality wine classifications’. Here, viticulture is not merely a tradition, but a living culture.

Johannisberg is a district of the historic university town of Geisenheim and is also one of the most sought-after residential areas in the Rheingau. Picturesquely situated on a hill, the village offers impressive views of the Rhine, a peaceful, natural setting and a historic atmosphere shaped by viticulture.

Johannisberg offers a particularly family-friendly infrastructure. The St. Johannes der Täufer nursery (for children aged one year and over until they start primary school) and a primary school (Johannes-de-Laspée-Schule) are located right in the village. Other nurseries – including municipal, Catholic and inclusive facilities – are easily accessible in Geisenheim.

Secondary schools such as the St. Ursula School (‘Ursulinen’/grammar school with a secondary modern stream), the Leopold-Bausinger-Schule (school for learning support) and the Rheingau-Schule (grammar school) are in the immediate vicinity. Particularly noteworthy here is the Schloss Hansenberg boarding school, a sixth-form grammar school run by the State of Hesse, specialising in mathematics and natural sciences as well as politics and economics, for gifted, high-achieving and socially committed pupils.

Geisenheim University, an internationally recognised academic institution, is also located directly in the Geisenheim district.

In neighbouring Oestrich-Winkel, the internationally recognised EBS University of Business and Law has its main campus, offering 9 degree programmes in business administration, 2 degree programmes in law and 42 continuing education programmes.

There are plenty of places to shop for everyday essentials in Geisenheim – from supermarkets and organic shops to bakeries, butchers and weekly markets selling regional produce. Pharmacies, banks, a post office and various specialist shops are also just a few minutes’ walk away. Johannisberg itself is home to small wineries selling directly to the public, as well as farm shops offering a range of regional produce. Medical care is comprehensively provided by GPs, dentists, specialists and pharmacies in nearby Geisenheim, as well as by St. Josef’s Hospital in Rüdesheim. The range of services is complemented by a variety of physiotherapy practices, midwives and naturopathic clinics.

The charming surroundings, with vineyards, walking trails and the nearby nature reserve, invite you to enjoy relaxing outdoor activities, ensuring that the leisure options leave nothing to be desired: Numerous vineyards with wine taverns, well-maintained cycling and walking trails, tennis courts, riding stables, an outdoor swimming pool in Geisenheim, as well as cultural events at Johannisberg Castle and in the surrounding communities make Johannisberg a place to live with excellent leisure facilities.

Those who enjoy life, are active and wish to live close to nature will find an ideal environment here – with a high quality of life for all generations.
