diverse landscapes, ancient mysteries, and thermal springs: uncover the hidden treasures of evia at one hour drive from athens.

the city of halkida, known for its unique tidal phenomenon of evripos channel, possesses a romantic waterfront, ideal for long walks and nightlife. the east side of the island borders the aegean sea, creating a coastline of incomparable beaches with crystal clear waters, ideal for swimming, relaxation as well as water sports.

northern evia is characterized by dense vegetation, imposing forests and hidden paradises. the monastery of saint david of evia, overseeing a peaceful wooded area, and the church of saint john the russian, in the small town neo prokopi, where his holy relic is kept, attract many pilgrims from all over the world. a few miles north, one can visit cape artemision, where the famous battle of artemisium took place during the second persian invasion in greece in 480bc, and where fishermen discovered two ancient bronze statues of exquisite aesthetics, now displayed in the national archaeological museum of athens. one of the best 10 spas in the world can be found in thermae sylla hotel in the seaside town of aidipsos, while small boats link northern evia to lihadonisia islands, known as the maldives of greece, due to their exotic natural environment.

in central evia, lovers of hiking and mountain climbing will be enchanted by the wild beauty of mount dirfys, embracing picturesque villages with traditional taverns, known for their local gastronomy.

a few miles towards the east, one can find one of the most beautiful pebbly beaches of greece, chiliadou, while at the same time, the region of eretria travels one back to antiquity as it is one of the most important archaeological sites of the country.

the southern part of the island resembles the cyclades and is surrounded by an aura of mystery, due to the dragon houses that have been found in karystos. these imposing constructions, made of stone and built on steep locations, have captivated the interest of many researchers, seeking to explain their existence and form one of the most challenging enigmas.

evia is also linked, via ferryboats that depart from kymi, to skyros, where thetis was hiding her son, achilles. skyros is an island of exceptional beauty, inviting one to explore sea caves and meet the unique breed of skyros pony that some claim to be the horses depicted on the parthenon.

positioned above the evian gulf on the outskirts of halkida, this sculptural residence approaches the landscape with a strong architectural confidence rarely found in the area. angular volumes in oxidised terracotta tones rise from nearly 2,900 square metres of private grounds, their sharp geometry softened by olive trees, open lawns and the changing light coming off the water below. from the upper levels, the view stretches across the gulf toward the mountains of mainland greece, while the house itself remains largely hidden from the surrounding road behind a long private approach.

designed across multiple levels connected by both staircase and elevator, the residence balances scale with clarity. extensive glazing frames the sea from nearly every principal room, while broad terraces wrap around the structure to create a continuous dialogue between interior and exterior spaces. the architecture feels deliberate and restrained: polished concrete floors, pale walls and natural wood details allow the proportions and light to define the atmosphere rather than decorative elements.

the main living areas occupy the central level of the house, where floor-to-ceiling openings dissolve into large terraces overlooking the gulf. a long linear sitting area anchors the principal reception room, positioned to face both the landscape and the evening light arriving across the water. adjacent dining and kitchen spaces continue the same visual language, with oak cabinetry, oversized work surfaces and carefully framed openings turning ordinary daily routines toward the sea. throughout the house, the sense of volume is amplified by clean sightlines, double-height spaces and carefully controlled natural light.

seven bedrooms are distributed across the residence with an emphasis on privacy and independence, allowing the property to function equally well as a permanent family home or a substantial coastal retreat for guests. the principal suites open onto private terraces, while secondary bedrooms maintain the same restrained aesthetic of soft neutral materials, natural light and uninterrupted outlooks. bathrooms are finished in pale stone and polished concrete, with angular window openings introducing changing patterns of light throughout the day.

one of the defining features of the property is the indoor swimming pool, positioned within a dedicated wellness area that allows year-round use regardless of season. large glass openings maintain a direct visual connection to the gardens outside, while additional practical spaces — including laundry facilities, extensive storage and generous parking — support the scale of the house discreetly behind the architecture itself.

outside, the grounds unfold gradually around the residence. broad terraces extend from the living spaces toward the garden, while shaded exterior areas create quieter spaces throughout the day. the landscaping remains intentionally open, allowing uninterrupted views across the gulf and the changing colour of the sea to remain central to the experience of the house. in the evening, the terracotta façades deepen in tone as the light drop s behind the mountains, and the water below begin s reflecting the final blue-grey light of the gulf.

located within easy reach of halkida and approximately one hour from athens, the property combines architectural distinction with practical accessibility, offering a contemporary coastal residence designed around light, openness and long-term privacy.
