The Antigua Esquerra de l’Eixample is, along with La Dreta de L’Eixample, one of the city’s earliest developed areas. Located right in the heart of the city, it lies between Avinguda Diagonal, Carrer Balmes, Gran Vía de les Corts Catalanes, and Comte d’Urgell.
This historic neighborhood is home to some of the most important landmarks from the city’s early urban development, such as the University of Barcelona, the Hospital Clínic, and the iconic Mercat del Ninot. The numerous stately, classical, and Modernist buildings that line streets such as Aribau, Muntaner, and the pedestrian-only Enric Granados, among others, are examples of the Eixample as designed by Cerdà. You can find apartments that are beautiful Modernist gems—ranging from medium to large in size—as well as fully renovated buildings.
Much of the neighborhood’s life takes place within the inner courtyards and on the ground floors, which are home to small new and traditional shops, countless restaurants, entertainment venues, and nightlife spots. As the nerve center of Barcelona, its connections to the rest of the city’s neighborhoods are excellent via public transportation, and if you have a car, you should know that securing a parking space when purchasing your home is highly desirable.
You should definitely consider this neighborhood if you want to live in an area with one of the city’s most diverse culinary scenes, some of its most iconic landmarks, a vibrant nightlife, and if you want to experience the quintessential spirit of a Barcelona neighborhood.
