hidden within a secluded native forest in the heart of remuera, the glade house is a tranquil retreat that feels worlds away from the city around it. winner of the nz institute of architects local award for housing following its celebrated renovation, this is a home conceived in quiet conversation with its setting.
originally a 1960’s modernist residence, the home was thoughtfully reimagined by nz institute of architects gold medal recipient dave strachan, preserving its enduring character while deepening its connection to the surrounding glade of nīkau, makomako and ancient kohekohe. canadian yellow cedar louvres, wraparound decking and carefully framed sightlines create a series of shifting relationships between house and landscape, allowing light and air to move freely through the architecture.
set across a 1365 sqm (more or less) site, there is a rare sense of retreat and immersion here, offering a daily experience akin to forest bathing; private, restorative and deeply calming. inside, the contemporary design gently separates living and accommodation, with the addition of a self-contained zone downstairs providing flexibility for family, guests or office.
feel the world melt away as you arrive home, enjoy afternoons in the dappled light of the canopy or relax with birdsong by the outdoor fire - the glade house offers remarkable privacy while remaining moments from king’s school, remuera village and some of the city’s most sought-after amenities.
a home of genuine architectural significance set within a living landscape, this is a property seldom found in remuera.
