As the most important navigation starting point during the Age of Discovery between the 15th and 17th century, not only does Belém have many harbors with an ancient feel of seafaring, but it also has numerous spectacular monuments, for example the Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery, which attract visitors from all over the world. And among all is the 500 year old and 5 story tall Belém Tower which was one of the most crucial fortifications through the Age of Discovery. In addition to symbolizing Portugal’s maritime hegemony, this architecture was also chosen as a World Heritage in 1983, becoming a must see landmark in Lisbon. The so-called Manueline style is a fusion between the characteristics of Moore and Arabic art; it was the most iconic artistic feature throughout the King of Portugal Manuel I Komnenos era and had also been the symbol of royal prerogative back then. Down the ages, numerous literati and intellects have come over to enjoy a cup of afternoon coffee. Of all the visitors, the most well known is Portuguese poet Pessoa; as a way of paying homage, the owners even went on to build a Pessoa statue in front of the café, exhibiting a great deal of bookish charm.
